Fire in basement

North Tonawanda firefighters needed about 15 minutes Tuesday evening to bring under control a fire at 203 Sommer St., between Oliver Street and Payne Avenue.
The blaze started in, and was confined to the basement of the home.
There was smoke damage throughout the home. Damage was estimated at $30,000 including $20,000 to the structure and $10,000 to its contents.
“The home was heavily charged with smoke and we had to ventilate,” said Fire Capt. John Mangus.
Mangus said firefighters received a report of a possible electrical fire at 6:58 p.m. and upon their arrival saw smoke. They attacked the fire with one hose through a rear entrance into the basement.
Fire investigators are looking into an electrical source as the cause and do not believe the blaze to be suspicious.
A mother and her daughter escaped the home uninjured and fled to a neighbor’s home. Mangus said the two are staying with relatives.
